Best Online Courses to
Change Career in the UK
Last updated 27 September 2026
Two things are different about changing career in the UK, and neither is the course. Several destinations have a domestic credential that a platform certificate does not replace, and some provision is funded so the cost is not the obstacle it looks like. Get those two right and the choice of online course becomes the easy part.
Eight destinations below. For each one: the platform certificate that teaches the subject, the UK credential a British advert is more likely to name, the realistic time part time, the evidence that actually does the convincing, and the count of new online job adverts the Office for National Statistics recorded in that occupation in July 2026. That last column is the part no other page answering this question has, and it is read from the published dataset rather than typed.
Where UK Demand Actually Was
Ordered by the number of new online job adverts ONS recorded in July 2026, highest first. Read the caveats before you read the numbers: these are adverts rather than vacancies, one advert is not one job, the series is monthly and lags by roughly six weeks, and it covers the UK only. It is a measure of what employers were advertising for, which is the closest available proxy for where a career changer's applications will land.
| Destination | ONS occupation | New online job adverts, July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Software developer | Programmers and software development professionals (SOC 2134) | 9,177 |
| IT business analyst or systems designer | IT business analysts, architects and systems designers (SOC 2133) | 8,003 |
| HR and people | Human resources and industrial relations officers (SOC 3571) | 6,672 |
| Marketing | Advertising and marketing associate professionals (SOC 3554) | 5,336 |
| Data analyst | Data analysts (SOC 3544) | 1,708 |
| Project support and project management | Project support officers (SOC 3543) | 1,513 |
| UX and product design | Graphic and multimedia designers (SOC 2142) | 1,409 |
| Accounting | Chartered and certified accountants (SOC 2421) | 1,238 |
The occupation labels are ONS's own and are reproduced rather than paraphrased, because a renamed occupation cannot be checked against the source. The Eight Routes
In the same order as the table. The UK credential column is the one most guides leave out, and it is the one that decides whether a course is the qualification or the preparation for it.
Software developer
12 to 18 months of self study, or 3 to 4 months full time in a bootcamp- Course that teaches it.
- freeCodeCamp, then a bootcamp such as Le Wagon or Makers
- UK credential.
- None, and this is the route where a certificate matters least. UK employers hiring juniors want code they can open.
- Evidence that convinces.
- A repository somebody can read, with commits spread over weeks rather than one upload, and a short account of what broke.
- Why your last career counts.
- The largest occupation in the ONS table below, which is worth knowing when people tell you this route is closed.
- Where the adverts were.
- Programmers and software development professionals (SOC 2134), 9,177 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (2,860), South East (1,290), North West (928).
IT business analyst or systems designer
6 to 12 months part time- Course that teaches it.
- A business analysis course plus SQL, and a product or delivery course if you are aiming at product
- UK credential.
- BCS holds the recognised UK certifications in business analysis, and adverts in this occupation name them more often than they name a platform certificate.
- Evidence that convinces.
- One documented process you improved, with the before, the change and what it cost. Most career changers already have this from their previous job and have never written it down.
- Why your last career counts.
- The second largest occupation below. It is also the one most open to a previous career, because the job is understanding a business and not only a system.
- Where the adverts were.
- IT business analysts, architects and systems designers (SOC 2133), 8,003 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (2,669), South East (1,134), North West (717).
HR and people
6 to 12 months part time- Course that teaches it.
- An HR fundamentals course, chosen for the CIPD level you are working towards
- UK credential.
- CIPD, which is the credential UK HR adverts ask for by name and by level. Here the professional body matters more than any platform certificate.
- Evidence that convinces.
- A policy, a process or a piece of training you wrote and somebody used.
- Why your last career counts.
- A large occupation, and a common destination from teaching, retail management and operations roles.
- Where the adverts were.
- Human resources and industrial relations officers (SOC 3571), 6,672 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (1,281), South East (1,050), North West (827).
Marketing
3 to 6 months part time- Course that teaches it.
- Google Digital Marketing and E-commerce Certificate, on Coursera
- UK credential.
- CIM is the UK professional body for marketing and its qualifications are named in UK adverts, particularly above entry level.
- Evidence that convinces.
- One campaign or channel you ran end to end, with what you measured and what you would do differently. Numbers you can explain beat numbers that look impressive.
- Why your last career counts.
- One of the larger occupations below, and the one where writing well in your previous career is directly reusable.
- Where the adverts were.
- Advertising and marketing associate professionals (SOC 3554), 5,336 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (1,393), South East (789), North West (561).
Data analyst
6 to 9 months part time- Course that teaches it.
- Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate, on Coursera
- UK credential.
- No UK-specific credential is expected for this route. Where an advert names one it is usually a tool rather than a qualification, most often SQL and Power BI.
- Evidence that convinces.
- Two finished analyses on data you did not tidy yourself, with the decisions and the dead ends written up. A dashboard with no account of what it was for reads as a tutorial.
- Why your last career counts.
- Domain knowledge from your previous career is a genuine advantage here rather than a gap, because the hard part of analysis is knowing which question is worth asking.
- Where the adverts were.
- Data analysts (SOC 3544), 1,708 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (525), South East (229), North West (197).
Project support and project management
3 to 6 months part time- Course that teaches it.
- Google Project Management Professional Certificate, on Coursera
- UK credential.
- PRINCE2 Foundation, which began as a UK government project method and is still the credential UK adverts name most, with APM qualifications alongside it.
- Evidence that convinces.
- Anything you have actually run: a budget, a rota, a move, a launch. Write it as scope, constraint, outcome.
- Why your last career counts.
- If you have managed people, money or deadlines in any field, the certificate formalises something you already do rather than teaching it from nothing.
- Where the adverts were.
- Project support officers (SOC 3543), 1,513 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (282), South East (225), North West (157).
UX and product design
6 to 12 months part time- Course that teaches it.
- Google UX Design Professional Certificate, on Coursera
- UK credential.
- None expected. This is a portfolio occupation, and a UK advert will ask to see case studies rather than a qualification.
- Evidence that convinces.
- Three to five case studies that each show a decision and the research behind it. A folder of screens is not a portfolio.
- Why your last career counts.
- Previous careers in teaching, psychology, nursing and customer-facing work translate unusually well, because the research half of the job is listening to people carefully.
- Where the adverts were.
- Graphic and multimedia designers (SOC 2142), 1,409 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (351), South East (220), North West (161).
Accounting
12 months and upwards, by qualification level- Course that teaches it.
- An accounting fundamentals or bookkeeping course, as preparation rather than as the credential
- UK credential.
- AAT for accounting technicians, then ACCA or CIMA for the chartered route. This is the clearest case in the list where a platform certificate is not the qualification and should not be written as though it were.
- Evidence that convinces.
- The qualification itself is the evidence in this occupation, which is why the platform course is preparation for it.
- Why your last career counts.
- The smallest occupation in the table below, and the one with the most structured entry route, which cuts both ways.
- Where the adverts were.
- Chartered and certified accountants (SOC 2421), 1,238 new online job adverts across the UK in July 2026, led by London (340), South East (163), North West (118).
The Funded Routes, Which Most Guides Skip
Skills Bootcamps are funded by the Department for Education and delivered through local providers in England. They are free to the learner, typically run up to around sixteen weeks, and are aimed at exactly this situation: an adult moving into a different occupation. The current list is published on GOV.UK and is worth reading before paying for anything, because several of the subjects overlap directly with the platform certificates above. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own funded provision through their own agencies.
The second funded route is quieter and available everywhere. On most edX courses the material can be read and watched for nothing, and only the verified certificate is paid for. So the sequence that wastes least is to study first and decide about the credential afterwards, once you know whether the subject suits you. Free online courses with certificates covers which providers allow which.
Careery earns affiliate commission on some course links, which is the reason to say plainly that a funded bootcamp or an audited course is often the better first move than anything we would be paid for.
What Recognised Means Here
One distinction worth carrying into every application. In everyday use, a recognised certificate is one a reader knows the name of. In UK regulatory use it means a qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, awarded by an organisation recognised by Ofqual, with Scotland operating its own framework. Platform certificates are not regulated qualifications, and where a UK advert names a level or a professional body, it means the latter.
That is not an argument against online courses, it is an argument for writing them accurately. Which online course certificates employers recognise takes it provider by provider, and do employers check online course certificates covers what a reader can verify.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best online courses to change career in the UK?
The same rule applies as anywhere: the destination picks the course, not the other way round. What is genuinely different in the UK is that several destinations have a domestic credential a platform certificate does not replace, and that funded provision exists. For data, software, UX and product the platform certificates below are the main route. For accounting, HR, marketing and project management the UK professional bodies, AAT, CIPD, CIM, PRINCE2 and APM, are what adverts name, and the online course is preparation for them rather than a substitute.
What are the best online UK courses to switch careers into tech?
For analysis, the Google Data Analytics certificate plus SQL, then two finished analyses. For software, freeCodeCamp and then either long self study or a bootcamp, with a repository somebody can read. For business analysis and systems work, a BCS certification is the credential UK adverts name most. Programmers and software development professionals and IT business analysts, architects and systems designers are the two occupations with the highest count of new online job adverts in the ONS table on this page, which is the closest thing to evidence about where UK openings actually are.
Are there free career change courses in the UK?
Yes, two kinds. Skills Bootcamps are funded by the Department for Education, delivered through local providers in England, free to the learner and typically running up to around sixteen weeks, with the current list published on GOV.UK. Separately, on most edX courses the material can be read for nothing and only the verified certificate is paid for, so you can find out whether a subject suits you before spending anything. Our guide to free online courses with certificates covers which providers allow which.
Do UK employers recognise online course certificates?
In the everyday sense yes, and in the UK regulatory sense no, and the difference matters when an advert names a level. A regulated qualification sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework and is awarded by an organisation recognised by Ofqual, with Scotland running its own framework. A Coursera, edX, Udemy or DataCamp certificate is not a regulated qualification and should never be written on a CV as though it sat at a framework level. Which certificates employers recognise goes through this properly.
How long does a career change take in the UK?
Three to six months for project management and marketing, six to nine for data analysis, six to twelve for UX, product and HR, twelve to eighteen months of self study for software development or three to four months full time in a bootcamp, and longer for accounting because the qualification itself is the route. These are the times the providers publish for their own programmes plus the portfolio work they do not include. Studying part time against a full time job sits at the long end of each range rather than the short one.
Which UK regions have the most openings for career changers?
London leads every occupation in the ONS table below, which is a fact about where adverts are placed as much as about where work happens. The more useful reading is the second and third region for the occupation you are aiming at, because that is where the same skills are being asked for with less competition. The full table by occupation and region, with the twelve month trend, is on our UK job adverts page.
Is a career change course enough on its own?
No, and it is worth being blunt about it, because the pages selling these courses are not. A career changer is asking a reader to believe they can do work they have never been paid to do, and a certificate says only that a syllabus was covered. Every route below names the evidence that does the convincing, and in each case it is something finished rather than something attended.
How do I explain a career change on a UK CV?
Name the transition in the first two lines rather than leaving the reader to work it out, then treat the previous career as transferable competence rather than as a gap: stakeholder management, analysis, delivery under pressure, explaining a hard idea to somebody who did not want to hear it. Do not apologise for the change. Careery reads your CV against one posting and lists the requirements it can and cannot evidence from what you wrote, which is the version of this advice with your own page in it.
