The Complete Job Hunting
Guide for 2026

Last updated 16 September 2026

A graduate job hunt goes wrong in a predictable order, and almost none of it is about effort. This guide covers what happens to an application after you send it, why most of them end without a reply, and what is different about looking for work in Riyadh or Dubai rather than London.

Start with your CV score

The 7-Step Job Hunting Strategy That Works

Most job hunters skip steps 1 and 3 entirely. Those two steps alone are why searches drag on for months.

  1. 1

Score and fix your CV before applying to anything

Most people apply with a broken CV and wonder why they get no responses. Use Careery's professional AI CV checker first. Get your score to 70 or above, which is where Careery's own bands stop calling a CV developing and start calling it solid, before sending a single application. The document you send is the only thing anyone sees before deciding whether to talk to you, so it is the one thing worth fixing before volume.

  2. 2

Define exactly what you are looking for

Know your target: 2-3 job titles, preferred industries, 3-5 target companies, location flexibility, salary floor. Vague searches produce vague results. Specificity saves weeks.

  3. 3

    Research your market salary

Know your number before applying. Use Careery Job Scout to understand the salary range for your target role and location. Under-asking costs you thousands per year. Over-asking loses you offers. Know the range and negotiate confidently from there.

  4. 4

Build your LinkedIn and online presence

Recruiters search LinkedIn before posting. Your headline should contain your target job title. Your summary should answer: who you are, what you do best, and what you are looking for. Have at least 3 recommendations. Add skills that match job descriptions.

  5. 5

    Apply strategically, not broadly

Apply to max 5 quality applications per day rather than blasting out 50 generic ones. Tailor each CV to the specific role using the job description keywords. Write a two-paragraph cover email (not a letter) that explains why this specific company.

  6. 6

    Follow up every application

Find the hiring manager on LinkedIn. Send a brief, direct connection request referencing your application. Email the company hiring contact (usually format: firstname@company.com) 5 days after applying. A follow up costs you five minutes and it converts silence into either an answer or a definite no, which is information either way.

  7. 7

    Prepare obsessively for interviews

Prepare 10 STAR stories (Situation, Task, Action, Result) from your experience. Research the company deeply. Know the role. Prepare 5 strong questions to ask. Practice out loud, not in your head. The difference between candidates who get offers and those who don't is almost always preparation depth.

Common Job Hunting Mistakes to Avoid

✗Applying with a CV nobody has read back to you, including an applicant tracking system
✗Sending 50 applications with the same generic CV instead of 10 tailored ones
✗Not researching salary before interviews, you need to know your number
✗Only applying to advertised roles, when a referral reaches a hiring manager directly
✗Ignoring LinkedIn, recruiters search it daily before posting roles
✗Not following up after applications, silence is the default and is easily broken
✗Accepting the first offer without negotiating, Gulf employers expect you to negotiate

What happens to an application after you send it

The single most useful thing a graduate can learn is that an application is not read in the order it was sent, and usually not by the person who wrote the advert. There are three normal routes and they behave differently.

Through an applicant tracking system. A large employer collects applications in software that parses your file into fields: name, contact, employment history, education, skills. If the parse fails, and it fails on multi column layouts, on text inside images, on tables and on anything in a header or footer, the record that reaches a recruiter is missing the parts that failed. Nobody rejects you at this point. Your record simply reads as thinner than the document you sent. Our ATS CV guide covers what breaks a parse and how to check your own file.

Through a recruitment agency. A large share of hiring in the Gulf runs through agencies, and an agency is paid on placement. That changes what they are optimising for: a shortlist that the client will accept quickly, not the best candidate in the pile. The practical consequence is that agencies match on literal keywords and on job titles you have already held, because that is what is easy to defend to a client. If you are changing field, an agency is the hardest route and a direct application is the easiest.

Through a referral. A referral does not make you a better candidate. It changes who opens the file and when. An application that arrives attached to a name the hiring manager already trusts is read on the day it arrives, in a frame of mind that is looking for reasons to say yes. This is the whole of the effect, and it is large, and it is why outreach is worth running alongside applications rather than instead of them.

The graduate problem, stated plainly

Almost every entry level advert asks for experience, and the reason is not that employers have forgotten how careers begin. A job advert is written as a description of the person who last did the job well, and that person had experience. The requirement list is a description, not a gate, and the part of it that is genuinely required is usually shorter than the part that is aspiration.

What follows from that is a different reading habit. Take one advert you actually want and separate it into three lists: things you can evidence today, things you could evidence with a project or a course, and things that are not going to happen this year. The first list is your CV. The second list is your plan. The third list tells you whether this is the right advert at all. This is the exercise CV and Job Match automates, and it is worth doing by hand once so you can see what it is doing.

If you have no formal work history at all, the mistake is almost never a lack of material. It is that coursework, a dissertation, a society role, a freelance piece and a personal project are described as activities rather than as outcomes with numbers attached. Our guide on writing a CV with no experience works through what to put in each section, and how to list online courses on a CV covers where a certificate belongs and where it looks like padding.

Job hunting in Saudi Arabia and the UAE is a different job hunt

Advice written for the UK graduate market transfers badly to the Gulf, and the parts that transfer worst are the ones nobody flags as local.

The number you are quoted is not the number you are paid. Gulf offers are usually built from a basic salary plus allowances for housing and transport, and end of service benefits are calculated on the basic alone. Two offers with the same headline total can be worth noticeably different amounts, and the split is negotiable in a way the total often is not. Ask for the breakdown before you ask for more.

Nationalisation policy shapes who gets shortlisted. Saudi Arabia operates Saudisation through the Nitaqat programme and the UAE operates Emiratisation, both of which set national workforce targets for private employers. If you are a Saudi or Emirati national, this is a live advantage and it is worth naming your nationality clearly on the CV. If you are not, it changes which employers are realistic and makes sponsorship a question to settle early rather than at offer stage.

Salaries are quoted monthly and are tax free. A UK graduate comparing a Dubai offer against a London one has to compare after tax against gross, and then subtract housing, which is the line that usually decides it. We publish what specific roles pay by city and experience band on the Careery salary pages, including data analyst salaries in Riyadh, data analyst salaries in Dubai and software engineer salaries across the UAE. The Gulf salary guide explains what moves pay across the region and routes to every sourced page.

What to do in the weeks when nobody replies

Silence is the default outcome of an application and it carries no information, which is what makes it so corrosive. The only way to stop it deciding your mood is to run the search as a week with a shape rather than as a queue of applications.

A workable week has four blocks. One block for applications, capped deliberately low, because five tailored applications outperform fifty copies and the cap is what forces the tailoring. One block for outreach: connection requests and short direct messages to people who already do the job you want, asking a specific question rather than for a job. One block for follow ups on everything sent more than five working days ago. And one block for the thing that changes your candidacy rather than your pipeline, which is a project, a course or a rewrite.

That fourth block is the one that gets dropped first and matters most, because everything else is throughput on a fixed candidate. If you do not know what to put in it, take the requirements that appeared in the last ten adverts you wanted and find the two that keep repeating. That is what finding your skill gaps is for, and Course Path turns the result into an ordered list with a cost and a length against each item.

Set a floor and a stopping rule before you start, not in week six. The floor is the salary below which you will not accept, written down, so that a first offer is measured against a number rather than against your patience. The stopping rule is the date at which you will change the target rather than the effort, because a search that is not working after two months is usually aimed wrong rather than run badly, and choosing a target role is a different exercise from applying harder.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does job hunting take in 2026?

For most professionals, job hunting takes 2 to 6 months. Graduates typically take 3 to 9 months. The timeline depends heavily on how targeted your search is, applying to 200 generic roles takes longer than applying to 20 perfectly matched ones with a tailored CV and strong outreach.

What is the most effective job hunting strategy in 2026?

The highest-ROI job hunting strategy in 2026 is: (1) get your CV into the solid band, 70 or above out of 100, with an AI checker, (2) use LinkedIn to reach decision-makers directly before the role is posted, (3) apply to roles within 24 hours of posting (applications submitted in the first day have significantly higher response rates), and (4) follow up every application with a personalised email to the hiring manager.

Should I apply to many jobs or focus on a few?

Quality beats quantity. A targeted CV tailored to 20 specific roles will outperform a generic CV sent to 200 roles. Use Careery's Target Role feature to tailor your CV scores and course recommendations to specific positions, then send highly personalised applications.

Does networking really matter for job hunting?

Yes, and for a reason that has nothing to do with the numbers people quote about it. A referral changes who reads your application and when: it arrives attached to a name the hiring manager already trusts, instead of arriving in a queue. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where a large share of hiring runs through agencies and internal referrals, that difference is larger than it is in the UK. Treat outreach as a second track that runs alongside applications, not as a replacement for them.

What should I research before a job interview?

Before any interview: (1) know the company's recent news and challenges, (2) understand the role's specific responsibilities and what success looks like in year one, (3) research your interviewer on LinkedIn, (4) prepare 3 stories using the STAR method for common competency questions, and (5) know your market salary range using a tool like Careery Job Scout.
