What a Fresh Graduate CV
Should Look Like in the UAE

Last updated 16 September 2026

One page, single column, with your visa status in the header. That is most of the answer, and the rest of this page is why each of those three is true, what a UAE recruiter is actually looking for in the first ten seconds, and the six things graduate CVs in the emirates keep getting wrong.

The Visa Line Is the Highest Value Line on the Page

A UAE recruiter reading a graduate CV has one question before any of the others: can this person start, and what does it cost to make that happen. A residence visa that can be transferred, a student or dependant visa, and a candidate applying from outside the country are three different propositions with three different timelines. Answering it in one line at the top removes a round trip and puts your CV in a different pile from the ones that do not.

It is also the one thing a graduate can state that no amount of CV writing can improve on. If you have the advantage, say it. If you do not, say that too, because the question gets asked in the first message either way.

Section by Section

1Header, with visa status in it

Name, city, phone with the country code, email, LinkedIn, nationality, and one short line on visa status. That last line answers the first question a UAE recruiter has and costs you eight words.

2A summary written for one job

Three lines: what you are, what you can prove, and which role you are applying for. If it would fit any of the six jobs you applied to this week, it is doing nothing.

3Education with the relevant parts surfaced

Degree, university, year, grade if it helps. Then a line each on the two or three modules or projects that relate to this advert. A final year project described concretely is the strongest thing on most graduate CVs and is usually reduced to its title.

4Experience, broadly defined

Internships, placements, part time work, campus roles, freelance work, volunteering. Each one gets a task and a result, not a job title and a date. What you changed matters more than where you sat.

5Skills split by evidence

The tools you have actually used, each attached to the thing you used it on, then a shorter familiarity line for the rest. This keeps the keywords a parser needs without making a claim an interviewer can dismantle.

6Certifications and languages

Provider, name, date, credential link. Then languages with honest levels. In the UAE the language line is read for genuine operational reasons, so precision helps you and vagueness does not.

Where Emiratisation Fits

Private sector companies in the UAE above a size threshold carry annual targets for employing UAE nationals in skilled roles, administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and supported by the Nafis programme. For an Emirati graduate this is a genuine tailwind and the fact belongs near the top of the CV rather than in a personal details block at the bottom. For everyone else the CV does not change, and it is still worth knowing which employers are under the most pressure to hire, because that is where the graduate programmes tend to be.

The detail is in Emiratisation explained for graduates.

Six Mistakes That Cost UAE Graduates Interviews

  • No visa line, which turns a five second read into a message thread.
  • A designed two column template that a parser turns into one unreadable block.
  • A photo taken from social media rather than a plain headshot.
  • A skills section of twenty five tools with nothing behind any of them.
  • The same summary paragraph sent to every employer in the emirate.
  • Date of birth, marital status and passport number, all of which appear on regional templates and none of which help you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a fresh graduate include a photo on a CV in the UAE?

A photo is common in the UAE and will not count against you, which is the opposite of the UK convention. It is optional. If you include one, use a plain head and shoulders photograph on a neutral background and keep the file small, because an oversized image is the most common reason a CV fails to upload to a regional job board.

How long should a fresh graduate CV be in the UAE?

One page if you have internships and projects but no full time role, and two pages only once there is enough evidence to fill them. Recruiters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi handle very high application volumes, so a page that makes the relevant thing findable in ten seconds beats a longer page that buries it.

Do I need to put my visa status on a UAE CV?

Yes, in one line, and it is one of the highest value lines a graduate can add. Whether you hold a residence visa, a student or dependant visa that can be transferred, or would need sponsorship changes the cost and the timeline of hiring you. Recruiters ask it anyway, so answering it up front saves a round of messages.

Does Emiratisation affect a fresh graduate applying in the UAE?

It affects which employers have an active reason to hire you rather than whether you can be hired. Private companies above a size threshold carry annual targets for employing UAE nationals in skilled roles, so an Emirati graduate is being actively recruited and should say so plainly near the top of the CV. For everyone else nothing on the CV changes.

Should a UAE CV be in English or Arabic?

English is the working language of most private sector hiring in the UAE and an English CV is standard. Arabic is an advantage in government, legal and some client facing commercial roles. If you write Arabic well, say so precisely on the language line rather than adding a second version of the whole document.

What do UAE recruiters look for on a graduate CV?

Three things quickly: whether you can legally start, whether the degree and the skills match the advert, and whether there is anything on the page that you actually did rather than attended. Projects, internships and university society roles all count as the third, and most graduate CVs under sell them by describing the role rather than the outcome.

Is a two column CV template a good idea for UAE applications?

No. A lot of regional hiring runs through Bayt, Naukrigulf or a corporate applicant tracking system, and two column layouts with sidebars are where parsing breaks. A single column with plain headings survives every parser and loses nothing a recruiter cares about.

How do I know if my CV is good enough for a specific job in Dubai?

Compare it against that one posting rather than judging it in general. Careery reads a CV against a target job you paste in and marks each requirement as evidenced, asserted or missing, which is a more useful answer than a score out of ten with no job attached. The first score is free.

Read it against the advert, not in general

Paste your CV and one Dubai or Abu Dhabi posting. Careery marks each requirement as evidenced, asserted or missing, and names the gap worth closing first.
