How to Become a Software Engineer
in Saudi Arabia
Last updated 30 September 2026
Search this question and you get university admission pages. Useful if you are choosing a degree, useless if you already have one. This is the other version: what the Saudi market hires for, what gets asked at interview, and what Riyadh pays band by band. Nothing here counts live postings, so where a count is what you need this page says so and sends you to a job board instead.
The Short Answer
To become a software engineer in Saudi Arabia, arrive with one deployed project you can defend in detail, in a stack that appears repeatedly in live postings here, with enough cloud knowledge to operate what you built and enough git to work in someone else's codebase. A computer science degree is the common route and some employers screen for it, but it is not what separates graduate CVs at interview. Finished, deployed, explainable work is.
The demand is concentrated in Riyadh, with Jeddah a real but smaller market for the same role. We are not going to put a number on that, because we do not count job postings and will not pretend otherwise. Check it yourself on Bayt, LinkedIn or Jadarat with a city filter, which will be current in a way a page never is.
The Route, in Order
Six steps, in the order that gets people hired. The first one is the one graduates most often skip, and it is the one that changes the CV most.
1Ship one thing that runs somewhere other than your laptop
A deployed application with a URL, a database behind it and a repository someone can read is worth more than every tutorial you have completed. It proves the part of the job that tutorials never cover: configuration, deployment, and the moment something breaks in an environment you do not control. One finished deployed project changes a graduate CV more than a second language does.
2Pick a stack the local market is hiring for
Look at twenty live Riyadh postings before you choose. The stacks that recur in this market are unglamorous and stable: Java and Spring in banking, .NET in enterprise and government adjacent work, JavaScript and TypeScript with React on the product side, Python where data and backend meet. Choosing by what you enjoy is fine. Choosing without looking at what is advertised is how people spend a year on something nobody local hires for.
3Be able to explain your own code under questioning
Graduate interviews here, as everywhere, spend more time on the project on your CV than on abstract puzzles. Why this database, why this structure, what broke, what you would change. A small project you can defend completely beats a large one assembled from tutorials that you cannot. If a recruiter asks why you chose something and the honest answer is that the tutorial did, that project is not helping you.
4Learn enough cloud to deploy and operate what you write
Not an architecture certification at graduate level. Enough AWS or Azure to put an application somewhere, connect it to a managed database, set environment variables properly and read the logs when it fails. Saudi cloud adoption is running ahead of the local talent pool, and being the graduate who can operate their own work rather than hand it over is a visible difference at interview.
5Get comfortable with the parts of git that matter in a team
Branches, pull requests, review comments, merge conflicts and reverting something safely. Nearly every graduate has committed to main on their own project. Comparatively few have resolved a conflict or had work reviewed by someone stricter than they are. Contributing anything to an existing codebase, open source or otherwise, gets you that experience faster than any course.
6Apply against the advert, not into the void
Take one posting, list every requirement, and mark each one evidenced, asserted or missing. Evidenced means a line on your CV proves it. Asserted means you claimed it. Missing means neither. For most graduate engineer CVs the fastest improvement is not a new skill, it is turning three asserted requirements into evidenced ones by naming the project where each was used.
What the Job Pays
These are the Riyadh bands from our salary page for this role, in Saudi riyals per month. There is no personal income tax on employment income in Saudi Arabia, so for an expatriate employee the monthly figure is close to what arrives.
| Band | Experience | Monthly range | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh graduate | 0 to 1 years | SAR 7,000 to SAR 11,000 | SAR 9,000 |
| Junior | 1 to 3 years | SAR 11,000 to SAR 16,000 | SAR 13,000 |
| Mid level | 3 to 6 years | SAR 16,000 to SAR 23,000 | SAR 19,000 |
| Senior | 6 to 10 years | SAR 23,000 to SAR 32,000 | SAR 27,000 |
| Lead / Staff | 10+ years | SAR 32,000 to SAR 45,000 | SAR 37,000 |

The Skills That Move the Band
These are the skills that change a Riyadh offer. None of them are graduate entry requirements: they are what to aim at once you are in, and they are part of why two engineers with the same number of years are paid differently. We do not attach a monthly figure to any of them, because nobody publishes per skill pay premiums for this role in this city.
System design at scale
Carries a premium
The single clearest divider between mid and senior pay in Riyadh. Employers here are building new platforms rather than maintaining old ones, and they pay for people who have made these decisions before.
Cloud and infrastructure: AWS or Azure, Kubernetes
Carries a premium
Saudi cloud adoption is accelerating faster than the local talent pool. Engineers who can deploy and operate what they build, not just write it, command a real premium.
Fintech and payments domain
Carries a premium
Riyadh's fintech sector, from Tamara to the bank platform teams, pays visibly above general product engineering. Regulatory familiarity with SAMA requirements is part of the premium.
Data engineering and streaming
Carries a premium
Telecom and quick commerce in Riyadh run large event pipelines. Kafka and warehouse work is the most common bridge from backend engineering into higher paying platform roles.
What Changes Because This Is Saudi Arabia
Saudization is the first thing. If you are a Saudi national, hiring you counts towards the employer's quota, which is a commercial fact and belongs in the header of your CV rather than in a personal details block at the bottom. If you are not, it changes where you apply rather than what your CV says. Our guide to Saudization for job seekers covers both cases.
The second is the offer. Gulf packages split into basic salary plus allowances, and because the end of service benefit is calculated on basic, two offers with the same headline can be worth different amounts. That is basic salary versus allowances in a Gulf job offer.
The third is the CV format itself, which handles nationality, residency and languages differently from a UK graduate CV. That is how to write a graduate CV for jobs in Saudi Arabia.
Where the Figures Come From
Every salary figure on this page is read from the same data file that generates our salary pages, so the two cannot drift apart. A band is published only where a published, checkable figure with a stated sample size exists and where at least three real employers can be named for that role in that city. The compilations behind those figures disagree with each other. Read on 18 September 2026, Indeed and Glassdoor differed by 59% to 72% on the same role in the same city, so a band is our reading across them rather than a point where they converged. Combinations that cannot be sourced that well are left out rather than estimated. These are compiled estimates for the role rather than a count of advertised jobs, and nothing on this site counts live postings. Figures were last reviewed on10 September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become a software engineer in Saudi Arabia?
Ship one deployed project with a repository someone can read, choose a stack that appears repeatedly in live Riyadh postings, be able to defend every decision in your own code, learn enough cloud to deploy and operate what you write, and get real experience of branches and code review. A computer science degree is the common route in but not the only one, and what separates graduate CVs at interview is finished, deployed, explainable work.
Do I need a computer science degree to be a software engineer in Saudi Arabia?
It is the usual route and some employers, particularly in government adjacent and banking work, screen for it. It is not universal. Engineering, mathematics and physics graduates move into software roles regularly, and so do self taught developers with strong public work. The less conventional your background, the more the deployed project and the public repository are doing the work for you.
What does a software engineer earn in Saudi Arabia?
In Riyadh the fresh graduate band runs SAR 7,000 to SAR 11,000 a month with a median of SAR 9,000, and the junior band above it runs SAR 11,000 to SAR 16,000. Those are compiled estimates read across published salary compilations that disagree with each other. Read on 18 September 2026, Indeed and Glassdoor differed by 59% to 72% on the same role in the same city, because Indeed derives its figures from job adverts and skews junior while Glassdoor's are self-reported and skew senior, listed with their sources on our Riyadh software engineer salary page, last reviewed on 10 September 2026. They are estimates for the role, not a count of advertised jobs. There is no personal income tax on employment income in Saudi Arabia, so for an expatriate employee the monthly figure is close to what arrives.
Are software engineers in demand in Saudi Arabia?
Riyadh carries most of the volume, with Jeddah a real but smaller market for the same role. We are not going to attach a number to that, because nothing on this site counts job postings and an invented count is worse than none. Search Bayt, LinkedIn or Jadarat with a city filter for an answer that is actually current.
Which programming language should I learn for the Saudi job market?
Look at twenty live postings for the roles you want before deciding, because the answer is employer shaped rather than universal. The languages that recur in this market are Java, C# on .NET, JavaScript and TypeScript, and Python. Any one of them taken to a working standard with a deployed project attached is a stronger position than a surface acquaintance with all four.
Do I need Arabic to work as a software engineer in Saudi Arabia?
For most engineering roles in technology companies, banks and multinationals the working language is English, and Arabic is an advantage rather than a requirement. It becomes more important in government adjacent work and in smaller local companies. Our guide to Arabic for jobs in Saudi Arabia goes through where the line falls sector by sector and what to write on the language line of a CV.
Can I get a software engineering job in Saudi Arabia from abroad?
Yes, and it is a normal route into the market, but it carries a visa cost and a delay for the employer, so large established companies with an existing sponsorship process are an easier target than small ones. If you already hold a transferable Iqama, put it in the header of your CV, because it removes both the cost and the delay.
Is a bootcamp enough to get hired as an engineer in Saudi Arabia?
A bootcamp can be enough when it leaves you with deployed work you can defend and with experience of working in someone else's codebase. It is not enough when it leaves you with a certificate and a set of tutorial projects, because that is the profile the market sees most often. Judge any programme by what you will have built at the end of it rather than by what it covers.
What is the difference between graduate engineer pay in Riyadh and Dubai?
Closer than most people expect, because the Saudi riyal and the UAE dirham are both pegged to the US dollar at rates within about two per cent of each other. The headline monthly numbers are comparable and the real differences sit in the package split, the sectors hiring and the cost of housing. We compare the two cities directly on our Riyadh versus Dubai graduate salary page.
