Graduate Salary in Riyadh vs Dubai
What the Numbers Actually Say

Last updated 16 September 2026

The short version: for the roles we publish bands for, the headline monthly figures in the two cities are close, and closer than the way people talk about them suggests. Both currencies are pegged to the dollar within about two per cent of each other, so the comparison is unusually clean. The difference is in the package, not the number.

Fresh Graduate Bands, Side by Side

Monthly, in local currency, for a candidate with zero to one years of experience. Both columns come from the same dataset and were built the same way, which is the only reason they can honestly be put next to each other.

Why the Two Currencies Make This Comparison Easy

The Saudi riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.75 and the UAE dirham at 3.6725. That puts the two within roughly two per cent of each other and has done for a long time, so a monthly figure in riyals and the same figure in dirhams are worth almost exactly the same. Comparing a Riyadh offer with a Dubai offer is therefore mostly a matter of reading the two numbers, which is not true of comparing either with a London or a Cairo offer.

Neither country taxes employment income, so both figures are close to take home for an expatriate employee. Saudi and GCC nationals in Saudi Arabia contribute to GOSI and UAE and GCC nationals in the UAE contribute to their pension scheme, and those deductions come out of the wage as the contract defines it.

Where the Real Difference Sits

If the headline numbers are close, the decision has to be made on everything else, and three things matter more than the salary line.

  • The split between basic salary and allowances, which decides your end of service benefit and varies far more between employers than between cities.
  • Housing, in both the size of the allowance and whether it is paid monthly or once a year, because both rental markets can ask for a large payment up front.
  • Which sectors are actually hiring for your role in each city this year, which is a per role question rather than a per city one.

The first of those is the one graduates most often miss, and it is covered in detail in basic salary vs allowances in a Gulf job offer.

How These Numbers Were Built

A band is published only where a published, checkable figure with a stated sample size exists and where at least three real employers can be named for that role in that city. The compilations behind those figures disagree with each other. Read on 18 September 2026, Indeed and Glassdoor differed by 59% to 72% on the same role in the same city, so a figure here is our reading across them rather than a point where they converged. Combinations that cannot be sourced that well are left out rather than estimated, which is why this page compares two roles and not ten. These are compiled estimates for the role rather than a count of advertised jobs, and nothing on this site counts live postings. Figures were last reviewed on 10 September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a graduate salary higher in Riyadh or Dubai?

For the two roles we publish bands for, the headline monthly numbers are close enough that neither city is obviously ahead. That is not a coincidence. The Saudi riyal and the UAE dirham are both pegged to the US dollar at rates within about two per cent of each other, so a figure in SAR and the same figure in AED are worth almost the same amount. The difference between the two cities sits in the package and the cost of living, not in the headline.

How close are the Saudi riyal and the UAE dirham in value?

Both currencies are pegged to the US dollar, the riyal at 3.75 and the dirham at 3.6725, which puts them within roughly two per cent of each other. In practice that means a monthly figure quoted in one currency can be read as almost the same number in the other, which is why comparing a Riyadh offer and a Dubai offer is easier than comparing either with a European one.

Are both cities tax free?

Neither Saudi Arabia nor the UAE levies personal income tax on employment income, so in both cities the monthly figure is close to what you receive. Deductions apply to Saudi and GCC nationals through GOSI in Saudi Arabia and to UAE and GCC nationals through the pension scheme in the UAE. Expatriate employees generally have neither.

What actually differs between a Riyadh and a Dubai graduate package?

Housing. In both cities a housing allowance is normal, and in both the rental market can expect a large payment up front rather than monthly. The size of that allowance relative to the basic salary, and whether it is paid monthly or annually, varies more between employers than between the two cities, which is why the split on the offer letter tells you more than the city does.

Which city has more graduate openings?

It depends entirely on the role, and we cannot answer it honestly, because nothing on this site counts job postings. Anyone quoting you a precise number of openings in a city should be asked how they counted. Search Bayt, LinkedIn or Jadarat for your own role with a city filter, and you will have a better answer than any published page, because it will be today's.

Should a graduate choose a city based on salary?

Not on the headline figure, because the two are too close for it to be the deciding factor. The things that actually differ are the sectors that are hiring, whether you already hold a visa or Iqama for one of the two countries, and how the employer splits basic against allowances. The last of those is worth more attention than most graduates give it.

Where do these salary figures come from?

Indeed, Glassdoor and Payscale, read on 18 September 2026, with the bands themselves last reviewed on 10 September 2026. Those sources disagree with each other: on the same role in the same city Indeed and Glassdoor differed by 59% to 72%, in the same direction every time, because Indeed derives its figures from job adverts and skews junior while Glassdoor's are self-reported and skew senior, and Payscale does not break out cities at all. So a band here is a compiled estimate read across sources that disagree, not a point where they converged, and the senior and lead bands are the least supported part of it. Combinations we could not source to a checkable figure with a stated sample size are deliberately absent rather than estimated.

How do I check what my own offer is worth?

Compare it against the band for your exact role and city rather than a national average, and compare total packages rather than basic salaries. Our guide to reading a Gulf job offer covers how to get both offers into the same four columns so they can be compared at all.
