What the package actually includes

Saudi offers quote a basic salary first. On top of the basic, expect roughly 25 percent as a housing allowance and around 10 percent as a transport allowance, so a stated basic of SAR 12,000 is closer to SAR 16,200 in the hand. Every figure on this page is the basic, so compare offers on the basic and then check the allowances separately.

Riyadh holds roughly 947 of the 1,600 open software engineering roles in Saudi Arabia, which makes it the single largest engineering market in the Gulf by vacancy count. Demand is driven by three things at once: the giga projects staffing new technical functions from scratch, banks rebuilding core platforms, and a fintech sector growing faster than it can hire. The result is unusual for the region, in that mid and senior engineers currently have more leverage than employers.

Skills that move you up a band

These are the differences the Riyadh market pays for, measured as the monthly premium against an otherwise identical CV in the same band.

  • System design at scale

    +SAR 4,000 to 9,000

The single clearest divider between mid and senior pay in Riyadh. Employers here are building new platforms rather than maintaining old ones, and they pay for people who have made these decisions before.

  • Cloud and infrastructure: AWS or Azure, Kubernetes

    +SAR 3,000 to 6,500

Saudi cloud adoption is accelerating faster than the local talent pool. Engineers who can deploy and operate what they build, not just write it, command a real premium.

  • Fintech and payments domain

    +SAR 3,000 to 7,000

Riyadh's fintech sector, from Tamara to the bank platform teams, pays visibly above general product engineering. Regulatory familiarity with SAMA requirements is part of the premium.

  • Data engineering and streaming

    +SAR 2,500 to 5,500

Telecom and quick commerce in Riyadh run large event pipelines. Kafka and warehouse work is the most common bridge from backend engineering into higher paying platform roles.

  • Arabic and English technical communication

    +SAR 1,000 to 2,500

Specific to Saudi Arabia. Government and semi government programmes require documentation and stakeholder work in Arabic, which narrows the candidate pool sharply.

  • One language, properly: Java, Python, TypeScript or C#

Before you negotiate

Because vacancy volume exceeds available senior talent, Riyadh is one of the few markets in the region where counter offers are routine and where a mid level engineer can reasonably ask for the top of the band. Read the package structure carefully: basic plus 25 percent housing and 10 percent transport is standard, and some giga project employers add a completion or retention bonus that does not appear in the monthly figure at all.

Anchor on the band, not on your last salary. The employer knows the range for the level they are hiring at, and quoting your previous pay hands them the number for free. Say which band your experience places you in, name the figure at the top of it, and let them counter downwards from there.

Then price the gap. If a skill on the list above is missing from your CV, you are negotiating at the lower end of the band by default, and no amount of framing fixes that in the call. Closing one of those gaps is usually worth more over a year than anything you win in the conversation itself.

Common questions

Is a software engineer salary in Riyadh tax free?

Yes. Saudi Arabia has no personal income tax. Saudi nationals have GOSI social insurance deducted; expatriate employees generally do not have a pension deduction. Check whether the quoted figure is basic salary or the full package including allowances.

What does a fresh graduate engineer earn in Riyadh?

SAR 7,000 to 11,000 a month, with a median near SAR 9,000. Graduates hired into fintech or giga project teams sit at the top of that range; those hired into systems integration or support heavy roles sit at the bottom.

Does Riyadh or Dubai pay engineers more?

Dubai is ahead at junior and mid level, by roughly 10 to 15 percent once converted. Riyadh closes the gap at senior and above, where scarcity is sharper, and Riyadh has more open roles in absolute terms. Cost of living favours Riyadh.

Do I need Arabic to work as an engineer in Riyadh?

For private sector and fintech roles, no. For government and semi government programme work, Arabic is often required for documentation and stakeholder work, and it is worth roughly SAR 1,000 to 2,500 a month because so few candidates offer it.

Which stack is most in demand in Riyadh?

Java and .NET dominate the banking and enterprise listings, TypeScript with React or Node leads in consumer product, and Python is most common in data heavy and platform roles. Depth in one of these beats surface familiarity with several.

How these figures were built

Figures are triangulated from Glassdoor city salary pages, September 2026, GulfTalent salary reports, September 2026, Payscale Saudi Arabia and UAE, Careery Job Scout, live listings, 90 days to 10 September 2026. This page draws on 947 live listings in the sample window. A page is published only where salary confidence is high, with at least 25 live listings and three named employers, so combinations you cannot find here did not clear that bar.
